Arlington Heights is home to over 75,000 residents and even though it has a fairly large population, is still considered to be a ‘village’ to those who live in the area. It is best known for the Arlington Park Race Track where the Arlington Million, a Breeders’ Cup event, is held. This race track also held the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the year 2002.
Another major attraction that is found in Arlington Heights is the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. This massive public library system contains one of the biggest collections of library related books and archives anywhere in the state of Illinois.
The city continues to grow, but land and space are becoming difficult to find. However, this has not stopped the explosion of condos, restaurants and other businesses that are moving into the Central Business District or the downtown area of the city. Currently, a special organization has been set up to help aid with the design of the city so that it will keep the atmosphere that the residents have grown to love so much over the years.
Because of the beauty of the city, there have been a number of movies that have been filmed in and about Arlington Heights in recent years, including a recent remake of the horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street. In fact, certain scenes of this movie were filmed at John Hersey High School that is located in the city.
Another famous landmark that can be found in the city is The Cellar. This club was opened by a local record store who in the 1960s and brought in regional, national and international rock bands over the years, such as The Who, The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. Entertainment features are still an important addition to the city and the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre has since been built downtown and includes a theatre, ballroom and classrooms that teach music and theatre.
Public transportation is also an easy thing to find in the city and the Metra – Northwest Line runs daily from two stations located at Arlington Heights and Arlington Park. Also, the proximity of the city to Interstate 90 and Route 53 make it easy to O’Hare Airport as well as the suburbs of Chicago or the city itself.
Most elementary students in the city attend a school that is operated by the 25th school district. Some parts of the city are also serviced by a few other districts, but the majority falls in the 25th district. High schools are found in District 214 and 211 and the majority of high school students attend Rolling Meadows, Prospect, John Hersey or Buffalo Grove High Schools. There are also many private schools that are found throughout the city as well.
